Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not just the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
