Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
