Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of approach shafts down to the facility... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey added. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

In December, the US military conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
