European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
