The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
