The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a armed takeover in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.
This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns
In a document approving the custody, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His offspring, his son Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a assembly of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the judge's determination was the possibility of his move to embassies near the home, considering that the probes revealed a record of planning to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork underscores that the US embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist American leader Donald Trump, leading him to enact a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
He is being kept in a national police facility in the capital and will undergo a custody hearing on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.
They also asked that he be authorized to depart his residence for medical care, saying he needed regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.
High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was prevented because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, the capital city.
The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were detained.
The justices found that the protesters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and return him to office.
At the time, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years after the end of his sentence.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
