Top Small Screen Choices: Seven Can't-Miss Films This Week

Highlighted Choice

The Substance Film

The filmmaker's unflinching satire tackles the oppressive nature of female beauty along with the feared consequences of advancing years. Hollywood star Demi Moore presents an inspired acting turn playing Elisabeth, an aging celebrity reduced to hosting a fitness program on TV. Edged out due to her deceitful superior Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she turns to a mysterious and horrifying treatment known as "The Substance". This generates a new version of herself named Sue, culminating in an increasingly toxic connection between them. This Friday, Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This classic whodunit story includes Knightley as Laura, an ace reporter who decides to take a break from covering world issues to embark on a luxury cruise alongside a terminally ill wealthy inheritor and donor, her partner, plus additional extremely wealthy guests. Yet once an unknown lady falls into the sea overnight and the entire crew insists she wasn't real, the reporter's sleuthing skills awaken. Available now, Netflix

This Supernatural Story

Soderbergh tests his creative boundaries in this clever ghostly tale filmed completely from the viewpoint of a ghost. When a household including mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their new suburban house, the camera – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. The teen shows signs of conscious of the supernatural presence, and it seems guarding her. But why? This is an entertaining concept that avoids overstaying, including a revelation that may be unexpected. October 11th, multiple showings, Sky Cinema Premiere

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his eccentric image through this self-referential adventure. He acts as a self-obsessed film star playing himself who takes on a million-dollar gig to attend a birthday party at a Mediterranean location for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Contacted by the intelligence agency to investigate the suspected cartel boss, the actor's unique performing skills is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, evening, on Channel 4

This Creepy Thriller

Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller remains effective despite the lack of a follow-up. Taking place in 1978 Denver, several disappearances has rendered the children anxious. Once Finney gets captured by the villain and imprisoned in a cellar, he fears a fatal end. However, the disconnected phone on the wall continues to ring, with eerie communicators giving advice, as the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. This Saturday, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the struggle between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for greed in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish biopic of the disgraced televangelist and her felon spouse. Garfield plays the corrupt Bakker, who declares at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye commence capitalizing on the nation's religious faith. It's an extravaganza of bad interior design, bad makeup and bad faith, yet Chastain manages to show the character with compassion. October 14th, 1.15am, Film4

The Spy Mystery

This period's second offering from the filmmaker is a intelligence thriller as sharp similar to the collars worn by Fassbender's intelligence officer. He receives a mission with uncovering a traitor within their ranks from a group of five – one of whom is his spouse. Both actors are experts of calm composure, so a delicious psychological game of truth or lie develops. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela join in the smart espionage amusement. Friday 17 October, various showings, Sky Cinema Premiere
